Stevenson University and the Maryland Bible Society organized and sponsored the Biblical Bus Tour, Hallowed Beauty: A Day Tour of Sacred Art and Text in November. A regional exhibition of sacred art and text, it focused on the art and text in local institutional collections that are considered sacred in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The Institutional Collections involved were those of the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University, the Loyola Notre Dame Library, the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and the Maryland Bible Society’s Collection at Stevenson University.
During the bus tour, collection curators provided an introduction to rare works such as a first printing, first edition “King James” Bible, examples of Haggadot and other rare Hebrew publications from the 17th-18th centuries, seven volumes of the beautifully hand-written and illuminated St. John’s Bible, as well as the Vinegar Bible and the Theatrum Biblicum from the 17th century. At each stop, participants were treated to a full presentation with an opportunity to ask questions. Upon returning to Stevenson University our guests listened to a presentation detailing the technical aspects of printing the Gutenberg Bible as seen thru the eyes of Gutenberg, the printer.
Hosted by Dr. Glenn Johnston, Archivist of the Historic Collection of the Maryland Bible Society, the tour was well received. Participants’ comments included “Inspirational” and “Once in a lifetime opportunity”. While some of these collections are resident to the institutions, one was a traveling exhibition. Our guests were pleased with the ecumenical nature of the antiquities and amazed how freely they were able to touch the materials. Each institution was eager and pleased to present its treasures.
Thanks to a Maryland Humanities Council’s funding donation, Stevenson University is preparing a 16 page catalogue of the tour. All the participants will receive one. At minimum 500 of these will be printed and made available to the public by the participating institutions.
