Nearly a year ago, Stevenson University (SU) and the Maryland Bible Society (MBS) signed an archival teaming agreement that is uncommon in the world of university archives. The agreement allows MBS to place its Collection in the custodial care of the Stevenson Archives while allowing MBS the power to retain its rights of ownership and copyright. This Collection consists of historical Bibles including the 1611 first edition of the King James Bible, other bibles, religious books, historical manuscripts, pamphlets, films and artifacts including a scrapbook containing religious engravings dating from 1674 as well as the minutes and financial records for MBS dated from 1810 and those of the Washington City Bible Society dated back to 1828.
The agreement provides MBS the opportunity to obtain a level of care and security for its Collection, a value of $50,000, that would have otherwise been cost prohibitive. SU’s motivation for this agreement is the Collections’ inestimable educational and historical value to its curriculum since it has applications across our various disciplines. By this Spring, the Collection will be online, making it available to scholars and researchers worldwide. As the year unfolds, I will discuss the historical significance of different parts of the collection. In these forthcoming articles I look forward to describing to you the many secrets the Collection holds and why it is important that it be preserved and studied.
