What Holds Humanity Together
by Rev. Ernest Smart
The human skeleton, made up of over 240 bones fits together perfectly. Each bone is beautifully shaped and has a dedicated purpose. These bones fit together to accomplish one great purpose…..to keep you together, upright and functioning. If one of your bones is out of place or broken, you will soon know it. Ouch! Just so, the body of humanity has bones meant to fit together just as perfectly.
The timeless teachings in the Bible of our Creator Jesus Christ about love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control – are meant to be the bones of our lives. They are meant to keep our individual and our collective lives together and working for the good of all.
But often the body of humanity, which naturally includes every one of us, is in a crippled state. The peace bone is broken; the trust bone is fractured, the will of God twisted. And the result? The result is the same whether for each one of us or for all of us is – unhappiness, pain, illness, violence, greed, selfishness, loneliness, and misery. Whether it is one of us, some of us or many of us, the result is sin, causing distress throughout the body of humanity, to many innocent victims.
We do not need an orthopedic surgeon to fix the broken bones of humanity; we need the healing power and love of our Risen Lord as it is presented in the Bible. Everyone alive today is called upon, indeed challenged, to listen to and read the personal, positive and practical guidance which can only come from the One who created us, gave us life and called us to live in His image.
I encourage you to read at least a chapter of the Bible every day. Start, for example, with reading the Psalms…or Proverbs…..or the Gospel of John. Learn how much your God loves you and wants you whole. He wants you to walk upright – physically, mentally and spiritually – with purpose and joy in every step every day.
