It is not only possible; it is being done through the partnership of the Maryland Bible Society with two extraordinary ministries, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Bringing Bibles into public elementary schools is allowed thanks to the Good News Clubs v Milford Central School case of June, 2001. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of allowing Good News Clubs to meet in public elementary schools after school hours based on equal access and protection from viewpoint discrimination.
Good News Clubs have been started in some Maryland public schools and now 3,000+ children have become members with 550 having given their hearts to Christ. Over 400+ Christian volunteers have been trained to impact their lives by teaching Bible stories, utilizing colorful materials, songs, memory verses, moral lessons and review games focused on applying these truths to their lives. CEF brings the Gospel and Maryland Bible Society brings the Bibles to each child who joins the GNC. Combined they are bringing Sunday school to school.
Why do parents and schools want these Good News Clubs? As Dr. Cathy Gantz, past President of the Baltimore County Principals Association expressed her approval at a 1 year celebration of having a GNC in her school, “We are so glad to have a co-ed club here at school… (we) are seeing the gender gap in reading, math and science finally closing… our suspension rate has dropped from 11.5% to 2% and grades overall have improved. The Good News Club has brought peace to Hernwood Elementary School…”
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a sports ministry started in 1954 and is now in most of our high schools thanks to the Equal Access Act, a Federal law passed in 1984 to compel federally funded secondary schools to provide equal access to extracurricular clubs. Religious groups lobbied to ensure students the right to conduct Bible study programs during lunch and after school. The law was ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court in 1990 in the case of Westside Community Schools v Mergens, and schools were ordered to allow student led Christian groups to meet.
Members of the Huddle (the Bible study club) in one of our local schools recently wanted to see if any of the other students would want Bibles. After receiving 300 New Testaments from MBS, they set up a table near the school store and made them available on request. Over 250 students asked questions, shared their contact information and expressed a desire to receive a Bible. 250 students walked out of school that day carrying Word of God – the New Testament.
Maryland Bible Society celebrates these freedoms and is pleased to partner with Child Evangelism Fellowship and Fellowship of Christian Athletes as they spread the Word of God, teaching students about the Savior who loves them and who gives purpose to their life.
